The Nikolo- Terebenskaya Monastery is located in the village of Truzhenik (formerly Terebeni), Tver District, about halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Mologa River. The history of the Monastery dates back to 1492 at which time a small wooden chapel was built there and contained an icon of St. Nicholas. According to legend, the icon repeatedly left the church by itself traveling to a spring on the banks of the Mologa River where a larger complex would eventually be built in the 17th century. By 1860 the monastery was surrounded by walls and towers as depicted in the offered lot and preserved a copy of the original miraculous icon of St. Nicholas and the Tereben Mother of God. By 1908 there was a shelter for the poor and elderly clergy. Until 1917, the monastery owned 1350 hectares of land, about 40 inhabitants lived in it. After the closure of the monastery by the Soviet government, the St. Nicholas church survived, as it was used by the local sovkhoz first as a storage of fertilizers, and later as a gym. The village of Terebeni was renamed Truzhenik (Hardworker) after the sovkhoz. In the mid-1990s, it was revived as a nunnery and remained as such until  2020, at which time by the decision of the Holy Synod, the monastery was transformed into a male monastery. At present, churches of Saint Nicholas and Annunciation are to be reconstructed, as well as the chapel of St. Alexander Svirsky, the rector's and fraternal buildings and the wall.

The date of 1892, as found on the oklad, would correspond with the 400th anniversary of the founding of the monastery in the year 1492. Viktor Mihailovich Vasnetsov (1848-1926) was a noted Russian artist who specialized in mythological and historical subjects. He is considered a co-founder of Russian folklorist and romantic nationalistic painting, and a key figure in the Russian Revivalist movement. His grandfather was an icon painter and at the age of 10 Vasnetsov worked at an icon workshop in the merchant village of Ryabovo. He was a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts and was a member of the Peredvizniki movement. In 1882 he designed the church in Abramstevo, executed jointly with Vasily Polenov. However, he is probably best known today for his frescos in St. Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev (1884-1889) see lot #408
