Description:

RARE US M1841 MEXICAN WAR DRAGOON BELT W/ PLATE & SABER STRAPS.
Comprising an exceedingly scarce U.S. M-1841 Dragoon white buff leather belt with original oval US puppy paw belt plate with leather shield on verso and with original saber straps for the model 1833 Dragoon saber by Ames. The Dragoons were the earliest U.S. Cavalry and served on the western frontier. Both Lee and Stuart served in the Dragoons before the Civil War. Buff leather was used because it did not deteriorate like other types of leather.  US regulations called for white buff (like the offered lot) until 1851, when the color was changed to dark buff leather. This then would make this a pre1851 example. Verso of belt perhaps unit marked with the number 13. Length of belt 38 inches.  Exceedingly scarce. For a similar example see Dorsey's book on Military Belts, page 153.

  • Condition: Important Notice: The absence of condition information in the description does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition, a condition report is available by request.
