The Digest is one of three parts of the Corpus Juris Civilis, a collection of fundamental works in jurisprudence issued by order of Justinian I, Byzantine Emperor in the sixth century, which compiled and systematized all known Roman law up to present time. The Corpus Juris Civils is considered by many to be the most significant and influential secular legal manuscripts in known history. The Digest, comprised of 50 books, was further separated into three volumes: the Digestum Vetus, the Digestum Inforiatum, and the Digestum Novum. The offered lot is the first volume, Digestum Vetus, which encompasses books I-XXIII and is complete in itself.
