Description:

RARE 13 STAR SILK PRESENTATION FLAG, ATTRIBUTED TO ROSS FAMILY. Comprising a very fine U.S. Colonial style 13-star silk flag with hand embroidered stars on a machine sewn silk flag. The hoist with embroidered dedicatory text, "In Memoriam ? Simon W. Scott, First Pres, Washington Society Sons American Revolution ? Seattle July 20, 1906".  Attributed to the great grand daughter of Betsy Ross, Mary Catherine Albright Robison (1841-1932). 29.5 inches x 47.25 inches. In an excellent state of preservation, with bright colors and unmounted.

According to his obituary, published in the Tacoma, Washington, The News Tribune, of July 19, 1906, "Colonel Simon Winfield Scott, for more than a quarter of a century a resident to Seattle, died yesterday afternoon. Last May Col. Scott was stricken with paralysis. He was 74 years of age. Col. Scott was connected with the Pacific Coast company in the capacity of general land and tax agent. He held the same position with the old Oregon Improvement company, his service with the two companies extending over 16 years. Before Col. Scott came to Seattle to reside, he was a figure of national prominence. Before the Civil War he was engaged in construction work on the Panama Canal. He returned to America before the outbreak of the war, organized the Seventh New York regiment, which he commanded, and served in many memorable conflicts. He afterwards served as Indian agent, being in charge of the Sioux Reservation. Col. Scott was custodian of Chief Joseph after his capture by General Miles. Col. Scott was a member of John F. Miller Post, G.A.R., and of the first president of the Washington State Sons of American Revolution."

It is well known that the granddaughter of Betsy Ross, Rachel Wilson Albright (1812-1905) and her daughter, Mary Catherine Albright Robison (1841-1932), produced such flags in support of the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association as well as on commission often for those related to Revolutionary War organizations such as the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. (see previous lot). Records indicate that these were often accompanied by a handwritten note pinned to the flag identifying the maker as one of Betsy Ross' grand or great-grandchildren, however these notes rarely survived. As in the previous lot, the hoists are often hand inscribed whereas in this case the hoist has been embroidered with text. Considering the time frame and the recipients association with the Sons of the American Revolution, it would seem very plausible that the offered lot was indeed by the hand of Mary Catherine Albright Robison (1841-1932) great grand daughter of Betsy Ross (1752-1836).
