Of wood construction with square nails, dovetailed joints, slightly domed lid, large bail handles, original paint, the front stenciled BAND MASTER/9TH REGT. IA VOL, and the underside with casters in each corner. The 9th Regiment of Iowa was raised in Dubuque, and marched over 4,000 miles and traveled by steamboat 6,000 miles, including major battles such as Vicksburg and Shermans March to the Sea. Records identify the following as Band Leaders of the 9th: John Engreman, Residence of Dubuque, enlisted and appointed drum major in 1861, Thomas J. Barber, Resident of Dubuque, enlisted 1861 and appointed Drum Major 1863, and Ferdinand Hepp, Resident of Dubuque, enlisted as First Class Musician in 1861. Height 19 inches, width 31.5 inches, depth 18 inches.
