Dorothy Young Graham was born in Geneseo, Illinois in 1918. She received a BA from Stephens College followed by a BFA (1942) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she studied under Grant Wood (1891-1942). Additionally, she studied with Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) and print making under Adolph Dehn (1895-1968), both of whom strongly influenced her work. In December 1941 she married Annawan, Illinois dentist Dr. Ralph W. Graham. Immediately upon graduation from the University of Iowa in 1942 she began to exhibit, beginning first at the Davenport Museum of Art (Now the Figge Art Museum), Davenport, Iowa. In June of 1944 she exhibited at the American Annual Exhibition of Watercolors and Drawings at the Art Institute, Chicago. In a review of the show, Chicago Tribune columnist Eleanor Jewett described a painting by Graham titled "Sleepless Night" as "…another shivery picture which sets ghosts to walking." She continued exhibiting at the International Watercolor Society at the Chicago Art Institute, and the Paul Theobald Gallery also in Chicago. She was the recipient of the David Palmer Award and the Wagner Printing Company Purchase Award. For the most part, her paintings reflect her Midwest surroundings often in idyllic, surrealistic, mystical or dark terms. Based on her style and Chicago exhibition history it is hard not to believe that her path must have crossed with noted surrealist painter Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977) and it is likely they had works in the same exhibitions.
