Description:

A FINE TSAR ALEXANDER III RELATED ICON, C. 1888. This finely painted icon is of course related to the survival of the Imperial family after the train derailment on which he and his family were passengers, near the Borki station in present day Ukraine on October 17, 1888 on their return trip home to St. Petersburg from a visit to the Crimea. Finely executed on an ornately incised gilt panel with faux enameled borders, at top center is the Holy Visage - the face of Christ as it was miraculously transferred onto a cloth, and below is a gathering of finely painted figures each representing the name saint of one of the Imperial family members at the time of the Borki incident. On the bottom row from left to right are Saint Maria Magdalene (representing Empress Maria Feodorovna), Saint Alexander Nevsky (representing the Tsar) and Saint Nicholas (represent the Tsarevich) who would go on to become the last Tsar of Russia. Behind them are Saints Olga (representing Grand Duchess Olga), St. George (representing Grand Duke George), and further back still Saint Xenia (representing the Grand Duchess Xenia), and Saint Michael (representing the Grand Duke Mikhail). Also included are the addition of two other saints whose feast day is celebrated on October 17th including The Holy Prophet Hosea (far left) and The Venerable Andrew of Crete. The condensed and abbreviated inscription of St. Alexander reads: THE HOLY GOOD-BELIEVING ALEXANDER NEVSKY, the name saint of the Tsar. The fine cross hatching technique in the flesh tones and fine gilt highlights are representative of the best Moscow workshops of the day usually staffed by iconographers trained in the village of Mstera or Palekh. Of exceedingly high quality. 17.5 inches x 15 inches (44.5cm x 38cm).

Provenance:
Private U.S. Collection

The Borki train disaster occurred on October 17, 1888 (O.S.), near Borki station in the former Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire (present-day Birky, Chuhuiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine), 295 kilometers south of Kursk, when the imperial train carrying Tsar Alexander III of Russia and his family from Crimea to Saint Petersburg derailed at high speed. Twenty-one people died at the scene and two later, and many others were injured. According to the official version of events, Alexander held the collapsed roof of the royal car on his shoulders while his family escaped the crash site uninjured. The story of the miraculous escape became part of contemporary lore and government propaganda.
