BLAKESLEE QUICK-LOADING CARTRIDGE BOX FOR SPENCER CARBINES.
Comprising a good and scarce Civil War Issue Blakeslee "Quick-Loading" Cartridge Box for Spencer Carbines. Of hexagonal form with a tightly sewn leather cover, brass hinged lid opening to reveal a hexagonal wood block drilled for 70 rounds or 10 tubes (8 original tin tubes are present) with ‘D' ring side suspension loop, and back flap strap on verso of base. Missing tip of lid closer strap and bottom front angular suspension strap and ring also absent. Otherwise, overall good condition with no alterations or restoration. The front with faint US above E GAYLORD/CHICOPEE/MASS. Overall height 12.25 inches. The Blakeslee cartridge box was invented by Col. Erastus Blakeslee (1838-1908) who commanded the 1st Connecticut Cavalry during the Civil War. His unit was armed with 52 cal. Spencer carbines early in 1864. Blakeslee saw a need to increase the effectiveness of the Spencer carbine by increasing its rate of fire. This box allowed the soldier to load 7 rounds from a tin tube in roughly the time it took to load 1 rd. prior to his invention. The box can be found in 6, 10 & 13 tube variations allowing the soldier 42, 70 or 91 quick loading rds. enhancing the effectiveness & rate of fire. This box represents 1 of 32,000 produced by Emerson Gaylord in 1864-1865.
