Description:

A UNIQUE & UNCOMMON RUSSIAN RELIQUARY ICON, KOSTROMA, 18TH CENTURY. At top center a finely painted image of the New Testament Trinity Amongst the Powers together with the Mother of God and St. John the Forerunner, and immediately below the Guardian Angel flanked by a gathering of saints on either side. On the left side from the top down are depicted, St. Mary of Egypt, St. Nikita the Warrior, St. Theodore Tyron, St. Dmitry of Thessaloniki, and St. George Bishop of Mitylene. On the right side from the top down are Saints Theodosia the Monastic Martyr, St. Theodore Stratilates, the Holy Martyr Daria, the Holy Martyr Auxentius of Sebaste, and the Holy Great Martyr Barbara. Near the head of seven of the 10 saints depicted is an obvious slightly sunken circular indentation encircled with the name of the corresponding saint and presumably indicating the location of an implanted relic. Additionally, the silver gilt riza displays a gemstone mounted directly over that same region. The saints whose relic is presumably embedded next to them include: Saint Mary of Egypt, St. Nikita the Warrior, St. Theodore Tyron, St. Dmitry of Thessaloniki, Theodosia the Monastic Martyr, St. Theodore Stratilates, and the Holy Martyr Auxentius of Sebaste. The finely painted icon overlaid with an open gilded silver repoussed and chased riza mounted with gemstones and hallmarked Kostroma, dated 1770 and with Cyrillic maker's mark "??" for Gregoriy Stepanov Ratkov. 10.25 inches x 8.75 inches (26 x 22 cm).
